Forestry
Buchanan Lumber has Forest Management Agreements (FMAs) in the northern boreal forests of Alberta. An FMA is an area-based agreement that provides the holder with the right to harvest and grow timber in a specific area. Holders must prepare and be accountable for a Detailed Forest Management Plan (DFMP).
Buchanan Lumber and Tolko Industries have developed a 350-page joint DFMP that includes detailed maps, information about public consultations, wildlife strategies, annual allowable cut information, etc.. The companies partnered inorder to maximize resources and focus on re-establishing the original diveristy of the harvested areas together.
In addition to following the DFMP and abiding by government environmental regulations, Buchanan Lumber follows the Forest Care Code of Conduct. Member companies undergo self-assessments and independent audits to ensure that they are acting responsibly towards forests, wildlife, employees, and the community.
