High Prairie
Buchanan Lumber and High Prairie have grown together over the years. According to Gordon, his company has had an unwavering commitment to the growth of High Prairie and always will: “We’ve employed a lot of people and zealously tried to create as many jobs in High Prairie as we can, not just directly. We try to do everything we can to keep jobs in High Prairie because the town has treated us well and we’re trying to do the same in reverse.” Buchanan Lumber employs over 250 people seasonally and injects millions into the High Prairie economy each year.
High Prairie became the home of Buchanan Lumber in 1956 when founder Arnold Buchanan, Gordon Buchanan’s father, moved the mill to the Peace Country in 1956. For two years, the Buchanan’s sawmill was located in Valleyview (100 km from High Prairie), while the planer that they used on a contract basis was in High Prairie. When Arnold and Gordon decided to purchase the planer in High Prairie, they moved all operations west of the community that today has a population of 3,000.
